Gaming PC
My old gaming PC is dead. It gave up the ghost after I moved to my new apartment. What was worse, it died after a brief dalliance with life: I wired it all back up in my bedroom, flipped the switch, and even enjoyed a couple of hours of gaming before going upstairs to get a drink. When I returned it was off — and it never turned on again.
I suspect that something jostled loose in the move. I should have checked all the cabling and reseated all the daughter boards before firing it up, but I didn’t. After all the stress and mania of the move, all I wanted to do was play a little Team Fortress 2.
What’s worse is that I don’t really have time for troubleshooting these days. So now I’ve got a gaming PC that’s only about 18 months old that is mostly a pile of junk, but only because I don’t have the time or inclination to try to find the one piece that’s gone bad.
But one of the things I’ve found in my new neighborhood is an honest-to-goodness locally owned PC repair shop. In this day and age they’re pretty uncommon. And the ones I’ve found in New York tend to be ridiculously overpriced — in parts, if not in labor.
I’m going to take my old PC into this guy, though, since he quoted me an unbelievable fair price of $25 for diagnostics. I figure it’s worth it just to know what’s wrong, even if I just turn around then and part the thing out for pennies on eBay.
I’ll let you know how it works out. The idea that there may be an inexpensive local businessman just a few blocks from my front door who is willing to undertake the least enjoyable part of maintaining a custom-built PC fills me with tremendously relief.
Or would if I actually get off my ass and carry the big black box of junk over to him.

Joel,
Would you mind sharing the name of that repair shop in NYC? I have a friend that had his PC fizz out and got some crazy quotes for repairs.
thanks
